EES โ€” biometrics replace
passport stamps.

The Entry/Exit System is the EU's automated border-registration system for non-EU travellers. Every non-EU passport-holder โ€” visa-required or visa-exempt โ€” gets fingerprinted and photographed on first arrival.

EES is in phased rollout

The Entry/Exit System began phased rollout across the Schengen external border in October 2025. Some crossings now use biometric registration in place of passport stamps; full operational coverage is expected as the rollout progresses.

What is EES?

EES (Entry/Exit System) is an EU-wide IT system that registers non-EU nationals every time they cross the Schengen external border. It replaces the passport stamp with a digital record holding your name, travel document, biometrics (four fingerprints + facial image), and the date and place of entry/exit.

The system also automatically tracks your time in Schengen against the 90-in-180-day rule โ€” overstays are flagged at exit.

Who's affected

Every non-EU traveller, with no exceptions for tourism, business, family or transit:

  • Visa-required nationals (Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian etc.) โ€” register at the border in addition to their existing visa.
  • Visa-exempt nationals (UK, US, Canada, Australia etc.) โ€” register at the border; will also need ETIAS in 2026.
  • Diplomats & certain categories โ€” exempt under specific conditions defined by member states.

How it works at the border

On first entry under EES, expect 5โ€“10 extra minutes at the border:

  1. Hand your passport to the officer or scan it at a self-service kiosk.
  2. Place four fingers on the scanner โ€” index, middle, ring, little finger of your right hand.
  3. A digital photograph is taken (no head covering, no smile).
  4. The system creates your file and logs your entry.

On subsequent entries within the data-retention window, facial recognition matches you to your stored record โ€” much faster.

Data & retention

Stored for 3 years from each entry. If you overstay, data is retained for 5 years. After retention you're a "first-time" traveller again and re-enrol on next arrival.

EES vs ETIAS โ€” what's the difference?

EES

At the border

Biometric registration. No fee. Affects every non-EU traveller. Done at the border itself.

ETIAS

Before the trip

โ‚ฌ7 online travel authorisation. Visa-exempt nationals only. Done online before flights to Schengen.

FAQ

Do Schengen visa applicants need ETIAS as well?

No. ETIAS is for visa-exempt nationals only. If you have a Schengen visa, your visa is your travel authorisation.

Will I be fingerprinted every time I enter?

No โ€” only on first entry within each 3-year retention window. Later entries match you via facial recognition.

What if my fingerprints can't be captured?

Officers can override the requirement and proceed with a passport-stamp fallback. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting.

Does EES affect Ireland or Cyprus?

No. Ireland is not in Schengen. Cyprus is in the EU but not yet in the Schengen Area.

Travelling soon?

If you need a Schengen visa, our wizard prepares the file in about 20 minutes. EES happens at the border โ€” no separate registration needed.
